As a graphics editor, I work on a wide variety of topics, ranging from coverage of breaking news to longer-term projects and investigations. I’m always looking for opportunities to explain complicated topics in a visual manner. I have a particular interest in public health and environmental stories and strive to shine light into dark places with my reporting.
Before joining The Times, I spent nearly a decade as an investigative data reporter at the Tampa Bay Times. I’ve worked on stories about federal elections candidates hoarding campaign money after leaving office; Walmart’s outsized reliance on police resources; the Church of Scientology’s clandestine operation to buy up real estate in Clearwater, Fla.; a mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Fla.; and several hurricanes.
In 2022 I was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting along with two colleagues for a series that uncovered a local lead smelter that was poisoning its workers and the surrounding community.
I grew up in rural Illinois, received my associate degree from Sauk Valley Community College and studied journalism at the University of Illinois, where I met my now-wife while working at the student newspaper. I now live in the Harlem section of New York City. I also teach an online data visualization course at the University of South Florida.
All Times journalists are committed to upholding the standards of integrity outlined in our Ethical Journalism Handbook. I strive to make my reporting fair and accurate and to confirm all of my findings in multiple ways.
